Invercargill's Genevieve Behrent won silver alongside teammate Rebecca Scown in the women's coxless pair at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Behrent also competed as part of the women's coxed eight which narrowly missed out on a medal, placing fourth in the final.

Unlike many others in the elite team, Behrent didn't row while at high school. She only took up the sport in 2008 after attending a rowing regatta to support her brother and being asked whether she wanted to try rowing herself as she had the right physical attributes.

Just 14 months later, she was nominated for the New Zealand under-23 squad to compete at the 2010 World Rowing U23 Championships in Belarus.
