Brent Lewis

Biography

Brent Lewis, born in 1955, was one of coach Pic Parkhouse’s stable of fine swimmers at the Wharenui club in Christchurch.

He was a breaststroke specialist, winning New Zealand titles over 100m and 200m in 1973 and 1974.

Lewis gained selection for the 1974 Christchurch Commonwealth Games, where he swam in three events.

In the 100m breaststroke he finished 6th in his heat in 1min 12.70 and did not qualify for the final. In his 200m heat, his time of 2min 34.94s placed him 10th overall and he just missed a spot in the final.

Along with Philip Thorogood, Michael Toomey and Brett Naylor, Lewis lined up in the 4 x 100m medley relay, which was a straight final. The New Zealanders finished 6th in 4min 14.08s

Lewis married another Canterbury swimmer, Susan Hunter, who competed at the 1972 Olympics and in two Commonwealth Games.

He successfully ran the family furniture business, DA Lewis, later renamed DAL Furniture, with his brother Mark.

Brent Lewis died in May 2022, aged 66.
