Born in Christchurch, Humphrey was a member of the Avon Rowing club. In his early days in paired with his older brother David and later went on to win the Coxless Pair at the New Zealand National Rowing Championships in 1948. The pair were coached by Rangi Thompson.
Both Humphrey and David were selected for the Coxless Pair to represent New Zealand at the Auckland 1950 Commonwealth Games winning a silver medal on Lake Karapiro.
On retiring from competitive rowing, Humphrey went on to become a rowing coach and administrator for Canterbury and the University of Canterbury.
