Biography
Aucklander Lorraine Tong appeared only briefly at the 1974 Christchurch Commonwealth Games.
She ran in the New Zealand 4 x 400m relay team, along with Shirley Somervell, Sue Gukilau and Penny Hunt and they set a national record of 3min 37.5s to finish 5th.
Lorraine and her twin sister Adrienne were both outstanding teenaged sprinters while boarding at New Plymouth Girls’ High School. Later they attended Auckland University, where they continued to run well.
Lorraine, who ran for the Manurewa club alongside John Walker and company, picked a tough time to be a sprinter in New Zealand, with such talented opposition as Brenda Matthews, Hunt, Gail Wooten and Wendy Brown.
