Lucy Matehaere (Ngati Raukawa) started kayaking in Dunedin at age 15 and first represented New Zealand when she was 17 years old.
After competing at several Junior & U23 World Championships, she made the jump to the 2024 Paris Olympic team in her first year as a Senior athlete following her selection to race the K2 500m with Aimee Fisher. Her results from U23 World Championships include 7th in the K2 500m A final with Julia Padrutt and 1st in the K1 500m B final (10th) in 2023.
Outside of kayaking, she is finishing her BSc (Biomedical Science) at the University of Auckland and works on Maori-led research projects focused on climate change and Maori communities.
