Michael Johnston

Biography

At the Christchurch Commonwealth Games, Johnston swam in the freestyle sprints and the two freestyle relays.

In the 100m, he was fourth in his heat, in 56.76s, and 17th fastest overall. Johnston’s heat was won by the great Australian Michael Wenden, who went on to win the gold medal with a brilliant swim.

The Waikato swimmer was much closer to the action in the 200m freestyle. He finished 4th and last in his heat, but his time of 2min 01.09s proved very competitive. Eventually it was the 9th fastest time and he missed a place in the final by one spot.

In the 4 x 100m relay, New Zealand – John Coutts, Johnston, Ashley Fogel and Brett Naylor – were a somewhat distant 5th with a time of 8min 01.03s.

The New Zealand team – Naylor, Johnston, Coutts and Mark Treffers – again finished 6th in the 4 x 200m freestyle relay, clocking 8min 01.03s.
