Peter Brosnan

Biography

Otago weightlifter Peter Brosnan competed in the light-heavyweight (82.5kg) division at the 1974 Christchurch Commonwealth Games and went very close to claiming a medal.

Brosnan totalled 290kg, with a best snatch of 127.5kg and a best jerk of 162.5kg. Tony Ford of England won the gold medal with 302.5kg, but Brosnan had a close tussle with another Englishman, Michael Pearman, for the bronze medal.

The New Zealander led Pearman at the halfway point, but the Englishman had the better jerk and edged in front near the end of the contest.

Peter Brosnan won the New Zealand 82.5kg title in 1970.
