Portia Bing

Biography

EVENT: Athletics: Women's 400m Hurdles

A versatile athlete, Bing has won senior national medals in seven different events (heptathlon, long jump, 200m, 400m, 100m hurdles, 400m hurdles and high jump).

Birmingham was her second Commonwealth Games appearance after she debuted as part of the New Zealand 4x400m squad at the Glasgow 2014 Games. Portia's team mates in Glasgow 4x400m relay were Brooke Cull, Zoe Ballantyne and Louise Jones where they set a national record.

Bing previously featured predominantly as a multi-eventer and represented New Zealand in heptathlon at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing.

Working as a Fraud Prevention Officer for the Serious Fraud Office, the Auckland-based athlete has more recently converted to specialising in the 400m hurdles. She represented her country at the 2019 World Championships but was disqualified for a hurdle infringement.

Coached by James Mortimer, Bing is in the form of her life in 2022. At the Sir Graeme Douglas International in Auckland in February she lowered her national 400m hurdles record to 55.50s before chipping a further 0.06 from this time at the New Zealand Championships in Hastings.
