Brave bronze for Garton

Auckland boxer Troy Garton ended her Commonwealth Games campaign today with a bronze medal in the women’s 60kg division.

Garton, 30, lost by unanimous decision to Australian Anja Stridsman in the semi-finals.

Though Garton fought gamely, she was outboxed by the Australian, who won every round on every scorecard.

Garton said she went into the bout with a knee injury that hampered her movement. “I just had to stand there in front of her punches and keep my guard up the best I could,” Garton said. “But it wasn’t easy. She’s a very good boxer.”

Garton said she was pleased to come away with a bronze medal. “It’s better than I thought I would do, so I’m happy with that.”
