Challenging day at Versailles

The New Zealand eventing team lies sixth on 118.2 penalty points after an exciting day of cross country at the Palace of Versailles.

Heading into tomorrow’s final showjumping rounds Great Britain lead on 82.5 with France second on 87.2 and Japan third on 93.8.

Tim Price and Falco are the best of the New Zealanders on 28.5 in ninth place after Price added just two time penalties to his dressage score.

The combination managed to make up 10 seconds late in the course and Falco finished full of running.

“I can’t wait for tomorrow," Price said. "He loves it and it's what he’s designed to do. It’s a nice prospect to be riding him at the Olympic showjumping.”

Clarke Johnstone and Menlo Park are in 12th on 30.5 after they too jumped clear, though they added 4.8 time penalties.

“I couldn’t fault him,” said Johnstone. “He jumped every fence I wanted. He was on the job. I had no idea how he was going to cope with the crowds being so loud and so close to the fences, but if anything it helped me because he felt so motivated all the way around the course. It was a dream ride.”

Jonelle Price and Hiarado had an unlucky run, adding 28.4 to their dressage for an end-of-day tally of 59.2.

“I'm gutted,” she said. “It's my first mistake at a championship. I like to be reliable in this department and it was really such a silly mistake. It was one of those moments I didn’t foresee. She would have learnt a lot but we don’t come to the Olympics to learn, we come to deliver.

"The annoying thing is that I did all the very difficult stuff very well and one of the easier fences not so well.”

Michael Jung of Germany leads the individual competition on 17.8, with Laura Collett of Britain second on 18.3.
