Clareburt eighth in swim final

Lewis Clareburt was unable to make any impression in the final of the men’s 200m individual medley today.

The Wellington swimmer was timed at 1min 57.70s, a whisker slower than his qualifying time. The gold medal went to Shun Wang of China, who swam 1min 55.00s.

Clareburt finished fast over the final 50m freestyle leg, as he often does, and closed the gap on the field, but had left himself too much work to do.

Nevertheless he can take satisfaction in that he qualified for the Olympic finals in both his individual medley races and swam personal bests in both as well.
