End of an era: Boxing coach Chris Kenny leaves his corner

Renowned New Zealand boxing coach Chris Kenny has passed away at his Titahi Bay home aged 78.

National coach from 1993 to 1997, Kenny trained boxers at local, national and international levels for nearly 50 years – including his son Michael, who he coached to six national titles and super heavyweight gold at the 1990 Auckland Commonwealth Games.

He also stood in Paea Wolfgramm’s corner at the 1996 Olympic Games as the Tongan boxer won silver, and for five years, he was part of the Olympic Solidarity movement.

The New Zealand Olympic community passes on its sympathy to the Kenny family.
