Farquhar comes up short in javelin

Waikato athlete Stuart Farquhar could not progress past qualifying today in the men’s javelin.

Farquhar, 34, is at his fourth Olympics and was eighth in London in 2012. However, today he was below his best in his three throws, managing 74.24m, 77.32m, 74.38m. He would have been looking for an effort close to 80m.

The automatic qualifying distance was 83m. If not enough throwers reached that target, the top 12 were to go through.

Farquhar’s effort placed him outside the top 25.
