Grimaldi takes bronze in 100m

Grimaldi had to work hard for her medal. She was timed at 12.46s, some way behind the winner, Sheriauna Haase of Canada, who clocked 12.23s.

The 29-year-old New Zealander was in a private battle for the bronze with Sri Lankan Janini Wickramasingha, who finished in 12.50s, just a click of the fingers behnd her.

Competing for New Zealand at the Commonwealth Games, Grimaldi seemed delighted and proud afterwards, which is a tribute to the team atmosphere in the New Zealand camp.

'I feel a little bit disappointed in how I ran, but happy to have completed my first Comm Games and soaked in the experience. Really enjoyed it,' she said. Grimaldi explained that since the Paris Paralympics in 2024 she hadn't really found her feet.

'I've had two seasons where I've run OK, but this season was really difficult. I've been injured a bit. The timing worked out here, but maybe I wasn't 100 percent my best.'

She was happy she managed to 'pull it out of the bag'. 'I love racing at big meets. Smaller ones aren't necessarily where I shine, so I feel really happy that that's continued here.'

Grimaldi is no stranger to winning on the big stage. She's won gold medals at the last three Paralympics, starting in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. She's also won seven world championship medals since 1919.

The Dunedin athlete is equally adept and the long jump as the sprints.
