Hockey women held to a draw

The New Zealand women’s hockey team were held to a 0-0 draw by Canada today in their third pool match.

After opening their Commonwealth Games tournament with two wins, it was a disappointing game for the New Zealanders, who created plenty of scoring opportunities but were unable to apply the finishing touches.

New Zealand’s best scoring opportunity came late in the second half when a goal was awarded from a penalty corner, but was then disallowed on video referral after it transpired the hit just missed the backboard.

Canada fought strongly for possession and defended pluckily.

New Zealand coach Mark Hager said a draw was a frustrating outcome going into tomorrow’s crucial clash against Australia.

“Early on we had enough chances and I thought we played well in first quarter, but then we went away from the game plan,” Hager said.

“Canada played well and made some good saves, but we need to be better than that. It’s a big one against Aussie so now we need to refocus and go in ready.”
