Tauranga under-48kg judoka Chanel Kavanagh suffered a defeat in her opening bout at the Commonwealth Games today.
Kavanagh, 19, went down to Onoh-Obasi Okey of Barbados in a four-minute bout.
The New Zealander looked to be holding her own initially, but when Okey recorded a waza-ari, the second-highest score a fighter can achieve, her hopes were extinguished.
