Christchurch cyclist Joanne Kiesanowski finished the first day of the Olympic omnium event in 11th place out of 18 competitors.
Kiesanowski, 33, made a less-than-stellar beginning to the two-day event, finishing only 16th in the flying lap.
However, she fought back well, with a seventh place in the points race and was seventh again in the elimination race.
Great Britains Laura Trott and American Sarah Hammer lead with 12 points. Kiesanowski has 30 points.
Kiesanowski represented New Zealand in the Olympic road races in 2004 and 2008, but has carved out a new career for herself in the omnium, finishing seventh in the event at the 2012 world champs.
The omnium finishes tomorrow with the individual pursuit, the scratch race and the time trial.
