The New Zealand Olympic Committee (NZOC), alongside Boxing New Zealand, has confirmed the selection of two boxers for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games.

Lea Newman (Women’s 51kg) and Huriwaka Dean (Men’s 50kg) have been selected to represent the New Zealand Team at the Games, taking place from October 31 to November 13 this year.

The pair’s performances representing New Zealand at the 2026 World Boxing Futures Cup in Bangkok, Thailand in March served as a key qualification pathway for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games.

NZOC CEO, Nicki Nicol, said being selected to represent New Zealand is a special moment for any athlete.

“Wearing the silver fern and representing New Zealand is something every athlete takes great pride in,” said Nicol.

“It’s a special moment for Lea and Huriwaka and the people who have supported them on their journey so far.”

Boxing New Zealand President, Josh Wharehinga, said the selections are a positive step for both athletes and the sport.

“Boxing NZ is incredibly proud of Lea and Huriwaka for consistently performing at a high level and showing the dedication in training that has put them in a strong position for selection,” Wharehinga said.

“The opportunity to be part of a New Zealand team environment and compete internationally is a vital part of Lea and Huriwaka’s development as emerging athletes and future members of our elite boxing team.”

Dakar 2026 will be the fourth Summer Youth Olympic Games and the first Olympic event to be held on the African continent.

Further announcements regarding the New Zealand Team for Dakar 2026 will continue to be made in the lead up to the Games.
