Moorby strikes silver in javelin

Moorby (née Peeters) had a best throw on the night of 60.04m, which gave her a margin of more than two metres on the bronze medallist. The javelin event was won by Australian Mackenzie Little, who had a best throw of 61.88m and led throughout the competition.

Moorby's sequence of throws was 55.85m, 56.27m, 60.04m, foul, 58.14m, foul.

Though she's only 32, she won the first of her 10 national javelin titles way back in 2012. Moorby competed at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, where she finished fifth. At the 2024 Olympics, she was 19th.

She has a personal best throw of 63.26m, but was well off her best distance, as were most of the throwers in the field.

There were hopes Sam Tanner would do something special in the one mile event, which featured new 1500m world record-holder, and home town favourite, Josh Kerr and a host of other world-class runners.

The pace was tediously slow for the first 900 metres, which meant the field was congested and the race would be won by the fastest finisher That was Kerr, whose winning time was 3min 54.12s, just a shade faster than Peter Snell ran in 1962 when setting the world record in Whanganui.

Tanner led the dawdling pack at the halfway point, but couldn't mix it with the fastest finishers and placed ninth in 3min 56.93s.

In the men's pole vault, Nick Southgate finished seventh and James Steyn eighth. Both New Zealanders cleared 5min 10m but missed three times at 5m 30s. Steyn had a miss along the way, so Southgate edged ahead of him on countback. The pole vault went to Kurtis Marschall of Australia, who cleared 5.85m.
