New Zealand’s Winter Youth Olympic athletes are ready for two weeks of competition after being officially welcomed to the Lauusanne 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games.
12 New Zealand athletes attended the Opening Ceremony in Lausanne while two attended the secondary ceremony in the satellite village of St Moritz.
The Ceremony featured an athletes march, figure skating, traditional Swiss performances and the lighting of the Games Cauldron.
Alpine skier Katie Crawford says the ceremony blew her expectations out of the water.
“There was one bit where all these drones came out and used lights to make the swiss flag, that was amazing, the whole ceremony was really cool and now it’s go time.”
Flagbearer Campbell Wright echoed her sentiments.
“That was pretty cool, it was awesome to get to talk to athletes from all the other nations as well.
“It was really special getting to carry the New Zealand flag, it’s for sure a moment I’ll remember forever.”
Competition begins today (December 10th) with New Zealand’s curlers, ice hockey and alpine athletes in action.
