NZ Team Weightlifters named for Glasgow 2026

An seven-strong Weightlifting team is set to represent the New Zealand Team at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The squad reflects the current momentum behind Weightlifting in Aotearoa particularly in the Women’s divisions with five female athletes set to wear the fern in Glasgow.

Proven international weightlifter, David Liti is set to compete at his third Commonwealth Games at Glasgow 2026 and has the chance to be the first New Zealand weightlifter to win a medal at three separate Commonwealth Games.

Cameron McTaggart will also make his third Commonwealth Games appearance, adding leadership and years of experience to the team.

Olivia Selemaia won silver at the 2025 Junior World Championships, before capping a stellar year with an eighth-place finish at the Senior World Championships in Norway.

Litia Nacagilevu placed ninth on her Senior World Championships debut in 2025 and broke the Junior Commonwealth Games Snatch Record at the 2026 Oceania Championships.

Marco Mollo, Georgia Theron and Tuʿi-Alofa Patolo secured selection after strong performances at the 2026 Oceania Championships.

President of Weightlifting New Zealand, Simon Kent, said the selected group reflects both the experienced core and exciting talent coming through the New Zealand Weightlifting programme.

"This team represents the future and the present of New Zealand weightlifting,” said Kent.

“We have athletes taking their first steps onto the Commonwealth Games stage, alongside experienced campaigners who have consistently performed at the highest level. Together, they form one of the strongest Commonwealth Games teams we have assembled and we’re excited to see how they perform in a Games environment," he said.

New Zealand Olympic Committee CEO, Nicki Nicol, welcomed the weightlifters to the New Zealand Team.

“Congratulations to all the athletes selected today. We know Glasgow 2026 will be a special experience for this group whether they’re a returning athlete or representing the New Zealand Team for the first time,” she said.

“Weightlifting has a strong history at the Games and this team carries that into Glasgow 2026. I know our Chef de Mission Nigel Avery, a five-time medalist in weightlifting at the Commonwealth Games himself, will be eager to support this group in Glasgow," Nicol said.
