Olivier leaps into triple jump final

Ethan Olivier, who turns 21 next week, ignored difficult conditions to qualify with room to spare for the triple jump final.

Olivier took his first two attempts and recorded 16.11m and 16.09m and flagged his third jump. The leading qualifier in the triple jump was Jamaican Jordan Scott with 16.56m. The strength of the field trailed away and the 12th and final qualifier got through with just 15.32m.

Scott was pleased with his work. 'The conditions didn't really help, cold and windy,' he said. 'I could see after two jumps it was going to be enough to qualify, so I didn't bother with the third. Now it's just a matter of preparing properly for the final.'

Decathlete Max Attwell was placed ninth in the field of 12 after three events with 2348 points. He had a good 100m time of 11s, a very strong long jump of 7.51m and a moderate shot put of 12.41m.

The leader after three rounds was Canadian Damian Warner on 2765 points.
