Olympic heroes to receive a warm Canterbury welcome

Olympic heroes to receive a warm Canterbury welcome
Christchurch sports fans will be the first to see their Olympic heroes as a team, with Pioneer Recreation and Sport Centre acting as the venue for the ANZ New Zealand Olympic Team Welcome Home at noon on Friday 24 August. Mayor Bob Parker, who will join in welcoming the New Zealand Olympic Team back from their triumphant performance at the London 2012 Games, says Christchurch can take great pride in being selected as host by the New Zealand Olympic Committee. I know many Christchurch fans have been following the games, and have been there cheering as these athletes have enjoyed their proudest moments. We are very proud ourselves to have been chosen to host the homecoming on behalf of all New Zealand, and were looking forward to cheering for our heroes in person. The team which is hoped to include most of the 27 medal-winners will be present from noon. Following a ceremony, they will be available to sign autographs, snap photos, answer questions and compete against fans in various activities including hockey, volleyball, athletics, football and inflatable boxing provided by the New Zealand Institute of Sport. There will be competitions, interactive games and live music, including performances from the world-famous New Zealand Army Band. After the ceremony, some athletes will head out into the community to visit schools, hospitals, care facilities and businesses.
