Rooney misses out on final

Natalie Rooney has fallen short in her quest to progress to the final of the Olympic women’s trap shooting competition in Tokyo.

The top six from the five rounds of qualifying progressed.

Timaru markswoman Rooney, who won a surprise silver at Rio five years ago, finished on a five-round total of 117 after rounds of 23, 23, 23, 23, 25. Though she ended strongly with her only maximum coming in her fifth round, it wasn’t enough.

She was three shy of making the shoot-off for the sixth and final spot.

Slovakian shooter Zuzana Rehak Stefecekova was the top qualifier with a flawless total of 125.
