The time trials today in the kayak cross gave the two New Zealand competitors the chance to settle into the event.

There was minimal pressure on either Finn Butcher or Luuka Jones because all the competitors were virtually assured of progressing to tomorrow’s first round.

Both New Zealanders turned in good performances.

Butcher was timed at 67.74s, which placed him sixth of the 38 competitors. The quickest was Joseph Clarke of Britain with 66.08s.

Jones went even better. Her time of 72.10s was fourth fastest among the 37 women. The quickest was Frenchwoman Camille Prigent with 70.33s.
