The New Zealand womens soccer team fought hard but were beaten 1-0 by Brazil in their Olympic pool match at Millennium Stadium, Cardiff, today.
The result means the Football Ferns have now lost both their pool matches and their quarter-final chances are hanging by a thread.
They will need to have a good win over Cameroon in their final pool match on Wednesday to have any chance of progressing. The New Zealanders lost their opening match, to Great Britain, also 1-0.
Playing the worlds fifth-ranked team, the Football Ferns defended stoutly and played with fire and aggression.
They looked on their way to secure a creditable draw until they came unstuck in the 86th minute when Brazilian striker Cristiane chipped the ball over New Zealand goalie Jenny Bindon for the decisive goal of the game.
