Sofia Williams selected for Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games

The New Zealand Olympic Committee (NZOC) alongside Equestrian Sports New Zealand is proud to announce the selection of rider Sofia Williams to the New Zealand Team for the Dakar 2026 Summer Youth Olympic Games.  

Williams, who is selected in the Individual Jumping event in equestrian said representing New Zealand at the Summer Youth Olympic Games is an important milestone in her fledgling career. 

“I’m so excited to be selected for the Youth Olympic Games and to have the chance to represent New Zealand,” said Williams. 

She said the opportunity to compete at an event of this scale, in a country like Senegal, was something she was really looking forward to. 

“Competing in Dakar is going to be a unique and eye-opening experience. Being in a new environment, with athletes from all over the world, is something I can’t wait to be a part of.” 

“I’m going over there to give my best in competition, but also to learn from the experience and being part of the New Zealand Team,” she said. 

NZOC CEO, Nicki Nicol, said Williams’ selection marked an important step in her Olympic journey. 

“We’re very proud of Sofia and her selection to the New Zealand Team for Dakar 2026,” Nicol said. 

“The Summer Youth Olympic Games can be the start of an athlete’s Olympic journey, and this is a significant milestone for Sofia as she carves her path in equestrian.” 

Nicol said the NZOC wished Williams well as she prepares for the experience ahead. 

“We know the Summer Youth Olympic Games can be a powerful learning opportunity, both on and off the field of play, and we wish Sofia all the very best as she prepares for Dakar.” 

Dakar 2026 will be the fourth Summer Youth Olympic Games and the first Olympic sporting event to be held in Africa.  

Further announcements regarding the New Zealand Team for Dakar 2026 will be made in the coming months.
