Two silvers for para pairs bowlers

New Zealand's Julie O'Connell and Teri Blackbourn were on the back foot early on against Australians Louise Hoskins and Serena Bonnell in their women's gold medal match.

After taking a 3-0 lead on the first end, courtesy of some great drawing by Blackbourn, the New Zealanders lost four ends in a row and with it the first set 6-3.

In the second set, O'Connell and Blackbourn scrapped hard to earn a 4-1 lead going into the final end. They looked to have won that end too until an outrageous drive by Australian skip Bonnell with her final bowl earned her team three shots. That meant the set was tied giving Australia the match 1.5 to 0.5.

The New Zealand men didn't have the best of days, struggling at times with both their line and direction. Their case wasn't helped by the fact that Austrtalians Damien Delgrado and and James Reynolds played outstandingly, producing big shots at just the right moment.

No matter how hard Noble and Smith scrapped they could not open the door, and the Australians won 8-1, 7-2.

Noble, one of the most experienced bowlers in the New Zealand team, said he and Smith were pleased to leave Glasgow with a silver medal. 'I was in a team that finished fourth in Birmingham [2022 Commonwealth Games] so this feels a lot better.'
