New Zealand surfers Ella Williams and Billy Stairmand bowed out of the Olympic competition today.
Williams was beaten by Costa Rica’s Brisa Hennessy and Stairmand by Brazilian Italo Ferreira.
Williams of Whangamata scored 4.33 and 3.40 on her two rides and her total of 7.73 left her well behind Hennessy, who managed 6.50 and 5.50 for a total of 12.00 to advance to the quarter-finals.
Stairmand of Raglan was outgunned by Ferreira. The New Zealand scored 5.27 and 4.40 on his two rides for a total of 9.67, well behind Ferreira, who had 7.37 and 7.17 for 14.54.
