Biography

Matt Hutchins is set to make his Olympic Games debut in Rio. Matt was born in Blenheim before his family moved to Rolleston near Christchurch where he joined the famed Wharenui Swim Club, following in the footsteps of the likes of Jaynie Hudgell (nee Parkhouse), Susan Hunter, Phillippa Langrell, Lydia Lipscombe and Mark Trefrers.

He won a gold medal in the 400m freestyle at the Commonwealth Youth Games in 2011 as well as silver medals in the 200m and 1500m freestyle. Matt also won a bronze as a member of the 4x200m freestyle relay team. He also competed at the World University Games in 2013.

Matt, on scholarship at the University of Wisconsin, was the Big 10 Conference champion in 2016 over 500 yards freestyle and finished third in the NCAA Division 1 one mile freestyle.
