Nicky Samuels

New Zealand Olympian: 1205

Biography

Samuels has for some years been recognized as one of the sports leading swim bike exponents and under the coaching of Jon Brown in 2014 enjoyed her best season, finishing 5th in the overall world rankings with successive podium finishes to the season, including a bronze at the season ending Grand Final in Edmonton.

Samuels has two World Championship titles to her name, with the 2012 ITU Aquathlon and 2013 Xterra World Championship gold medals on her CV. She also highlighted her bike riding ability with a victory at the 2012 New Zealand Road Cycling Championships, upsetting her more credentialed cycling opponents to be first over the line.

Samuels missed the entire 2015 season with an injury that led to surgery and a lengthy rehabilitation before returning to action in 2016.

Samuels finished 10th at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and by her own accounts a disappointing 35th at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

A relative late comer to the sport after finishing second in the 20-24 age group at 2003 World Championships, Nicky has a degree in Teaching and Physical Education to her name. When not racing or training Samuels might be found partaking in anything relating to sun, surf, tents and mountains.
