Boxer Tasmyn Benny was the first New Zealand woman to win a medal in boxing at a Commonwealth Games.
At Gold Coast 2018 was Benny’s first Commonwealth Games and saw her take bronze in the under 48Kg category.
Of Ngati Porou and Waikato descent, Benny took gold against the Australian number one at the 2017 Trans-Tasman Championships and then in 2018 beat the USA sixth-ranked boxer with a total knock out at NZ vs USA Select tournament in Houston, Texas.
Benny has also targeted higher weight classes to gain additional competition experience. In 2017 she fought in the 51kg category winning against the current 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games silver medallist and finishing runner-up in the 2017 Australian Golden Gloves.
