Hamish Kerr had few problems qualifying for the high jump final when the Olympic track and field programme kicked off today.

Kerr, 24, from Christchurch, was one of 13 athletes who cleared 2.28m and so progressed to the final on Sunday.

Kerr entered at the competition at 2.17m, which he cleared comfortably. He got over 2.21m at his first attempt, missed once then cleared 2.25m and secured his place in the final when he cleared 2.28m at his first attempt.

His personal best is 2.31m and he is ranked 22nd in the world.

There were 30 high jumpers in the qualifying field.
