Tonight 99 athletes who were selected to represent New Zealand at the 1980 Olympic Games will be honoured. While only four athletes went on to compete at the Moscow games, the full team will be acknowledged for their achievements and the important contributions they have made to New Zealand sport.
The reunion, organised by the Olympians Club of New Zealand, takes place in Wellington and will be attended by more than 50 of the athletes originally selected. A number of will fly in from overseas for the function including Kim Robertson (athletics), Monique Williams (nee Rodahl, swimming), Jenny McDonald (hockey). Chef de Mission Sir Tay Wilson, Brian Newth (modern pentathlon) and Graeme Campbell (official) represent the small group of athletes and officials who competed at Moscow.
New Zealand Olympic Committee (NZOC) Secretary General and IOC Member Barry Maister was selected to the original Moscow team.
The effects of the 1980 boycott have been long-lasting for many athletes and we think that thirty years on it is time they were recognised he said. We are delighted so many of the team named will join us this evening from New Zealand and overseas. The thirty-year anniversary of the Moscow Olympic Games is time for us all to reflect on the important role sport plays in New Zealand society.
NZOC President Mike Stanley was also selected to the Moscow team and will take part in the function.
Athletes will receive commerative certificates.
