Olympic rings to welcome Kiwis
Giant Olympic rings have been unveiled at Heathrow, the host airport of the Games. The aluminium rings, measuring 12 metres in width, have been installed in terminal 5 international arrivals, and will provide a spectacular visual welcome to the 4,000 Kiwis travelling to London in July to support the New Zealand Olympic team. They were officially launched at a special event last week, with entertainment provided by the Band of the Irish Guards. British Olympic swimmer, Mark Foster said: The rings will create a huge sense of excitement and be a great part of the welcome for everyone travelling though the terminal. To New Zealanders travelling to the games the rings indicate the beginning of two and a half weeks of excitement at the worlds largest sporting event. The Olympic rings are one of the worlds most recognisable logos, representing the union of the five continents and the meeting of athletes from throughout the world at the Olympic Games. To New Zealand athletes the rings represent thousands of hours of hard work and training to reach the highest level of professional sport. Giant Olympic rings are being installed at other iconic sites across the United Kingdom, such as Edinburgh and Newcastle, to excite and inspire visitors ahead of the Games. Photo credit Getty Images
