New Zealand triathlete, Ryan Sissons has secured his first World Cup win at the ITU Triathlon in Madrid yesterday.
It’s been five years since the kiwi has made a World Cup podium, placing second at Huatulco, Mexico in 2012.
“I’m super happy with this performance. I just built on a solid swim and strong bike and felt better as the run went on,” Ryan said.
Ryan had completed a rigorous 8-week block of training alongside five time ITU World Champion, Javier Gomez (ESP) before the race on the weekend and all that training has paid off.
Triathlon New Zealand’s HP Director, Mark Elliott says, “it was great to see Ryan dominant in the race, especially at this world cup level. The win is great for his confidence as he leads into the French Grand Prix and Hamburg World Triathlon Series event later in July.”
Athletes were presented with new aspects of the course that were more challenging than previous years. The swim started at Casa de Campo, and from there, where Transition 1 was allocated. They headed up to the Royal Palace to Transition 2 for the bike leg followed by a challenging course around key monuments of Madrid before starting the final four laps of the run course.
Ryan will now travel back to New Zealand to carry on his preparations for the rest of the season before heading back to Europe in late June.
