The New Zealand womens team pursuit cyclists were unable to match their male counterparts and get among the medals at the Olympic velodrome day.
The men won the bronze medal yesterday, but the women, fourth in the last world championships, had to settle for fifth, despite breaking the New Zealand record by a sizeable 1.6s.
Lauren Ellis, Jaime Nielsen and Alison Shanks recorded 3min 18.514s in beating Belarus by 3 seconds, but still missed out on qualifying for the bronze medal ride-off.
The standard of riding in the velodrome has been incredible, and today the British women continued their countrys domination of track cycling events by setting a world record in their semi-final and going even faster in the final, when they recorded 3min 14.051s.
The team pursuiters completed their Olympic campaign by beating The Netherlands to secure fifth place.
Meanwhile New Zealand sprinter Eddie Dawkins bowed out after losing his repechage ride today.
He was ranked ninth of 17 after this mornings qualifying round, with a time of 10.201s, and this afternoon lost his first-round ride to Nijsane Phillip of Trinidad and Tobago. In the repechage he lost to Venezuelan Hersony Canelon.
In the omnium, a two-day event comprising six events, New Zealander Shane Archbold made a promising start by finishing second in the flying lap, a 250m sprint. Archbold recorded 13.112s, the second-fastest of the 18 contestants.
He wasnt so effective in the second event, the points race, finishing 15th to drop to eighth in the standings.
In the final event of the first day, the elimination event, Archbold was sixth. He finished the day in seventh position overall.
