Bruce McMahon

Biography

Bruce McMahon represented New Zealand in the flyweight (52kg) division at the 1974 Christchurch Commonwealth Games.

McMahon was an experienced wrestler by 1974 – he won the New Zealand flyweight title in 1969, 1971, 1973 and then again in 1975.

As with all the wrestling in Christchurch, the field was small – just four competitors.

The Aucklander was unable to bring the spectators at Christchurch Town Hall much joy – he lost his first bout, to eventual gold medallist Sudesh Kumar of India by a fall after 7min 17s.

In his next bout, McMahon suffered another defeat and saw his medal chances disappear when he was unable to capitalise on the good points lead he had in the third round and conceded a fall after 7min 57s to Australian John Navie.
