Charles was a member of the 1964 Olympic equestrian team that sailed to Tokyo, with the horses stabled on deck beside a pungent pallet of garlic.
Bruce Hansen captained the team, who finished in 10th place. Graeme Hansen (Bruce’s brother) and White were the other members of the team who competed, and Charles Matthews was the reserve with his horse Syndicate.
The 1964 Equestrian team were inductees into the Equestrian Sports New Zealand Hall of Fame in March 2020 as New Zealand's first equestrian Olympic team.
