Glenys Waller

Biography

Glenys Waller (née Steel) represented New Zealand in badminton at the Christchurch Commonwealth Games.

Waller, something of a doubles specialist, teamed with Warren Johns in the mixed doubles, but they lost their first match to the crack Scottish pair of Robert McCoig and Joanna Flockhart 15-11, 15-5.

In the women’s doubles there was an even tougher draw for Waller and Frances Erceg, who struck second seeds and eventual silver medallists Susan Whetnall and Margaret Boxall of England and went down 15-1, 15-6.

Glenys Waller is the sister of Graeme Steel, the long-serving Chief Executive of Drug-free Sport New Zealand (and its previous iterations). She married Dennis Waller, who played rugby for Wellington from 1970-74 and then for Canterbury for a season.

After the couple moved to Auckland, Glenys had a long stint teaching primary school children at St Cuthbert’s College. She also coached badminton at the school.
