Leslie Stevenson

Biography

Les Stevenson represented New Zealand in the 20-mile road walk at the 1974 Christchurch Commonwealth Games.

In a field of 15, he finished 6th in 2h 46min 56s, 11 minutes behind the winner, John Warhurst of England. Stevenson maintained a steady tempo throughout the gruelling journey. He was 4th at the halfway point and maintained his form and technique well.

The Southland walker won two national titles. In 1968 he won the 20km event in 1h 39min 33s and in 1973 he booked a place in the Games team by winning the 30km race in 2h 52min 33s.
