Biography

Known as Scratchy to his team-mates, Ryan has been referred to as one of the world’s best midfielders and is respected amongst his peers the world over.

Originally from Auckland, he has also played for Rotterdam in the Dutch National League and has been a stand-out player for them in the Euro Hockey League, featuring some of the world’s best players.His strengths being his vision and ball control and he often dazzles defences with some superb attacking runs where he eliminates players with relative ease.

Ryan’s life long goal has been to play at the Olympics and missing out in Athens due to injury was his career low. Ryan has competed at three Olympic Games campaign having represented New Zealand at Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016.

Ryan has been a stalwart of the New Zealand Men's side in a career which has spanned almost two decades and seen him become one of just three players to eclipse the 300 games mark.
