Biography

EVENT: Athletics: Men's 1500m

Tauranga-based Sam Tanner has competed at two Olympic Games.

In 2022, he finished sixth in the Commonwealth Games final in Birmingham, recording a stunning PB of 3:31.34, describing himself as “the happiest sixth-place getter ever.”

A two-time World Championships semi-finalist, Tanner currently sits number two on the all-time New Zealand lists for both the 1500m and mile.

Coached by Craig Kirkwood, he counts Tokyo 2020 Olympic triathlon bronze medallist Hayden Wilde amongst his training partners, and Tanner is an avid surfer.
