Teneale Hatton

New Zealand Olympian: 1161

Biography

EVENTS: Canoe Sprint: Women's K4 500m and K2 500m

Tokyo will be Hatton's second Olympic appearance. She made her Olympic debut at London 2012 – finishing seventh in the B Final of the K1 500m.

Born in Queenstown but raised in Auckland from the age of five, Hatton was a surf lifesaver before switching to kayaking.

In 2013 she won the K1 5000m World title and the following year at the World Canoe Sprint Championships in Moscow, she claimed the K1 1000m title in a world best time, which still stands today.

In 2015 Hatton switched her focus to ocean racing (surfski) and won the world title in the discipline in Tahiti that year. In 2019 she collected a World Ocean Racing Championship bronze medal.

She returned to the canoe sprint fold in 2020 and the qualified paramedic has been rewarded by winning a place on the New Zealand team for the Tokyo Games.
