15-year-old vault specialist Courtney McGregor has pulled out of the artistic gymnastic competition at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games after a knee injury was sustained at training two days ago. Coach Iosif Ferencz says hes disappointed for the promising athlete who was due to compete on Monday and Tuesday Glasgow time.
Shes clearly disappointed but not saying much right now, he said. All I can say to her is that she hasnt failed, because only those who dont try fail and shes tried and shes been delivering the vaults she had needed.
McGregor suffered minor soft tissue and ligament damage that is not expected to have any long term affects.
Fellow gymnast Anna Tempero has steadily improved following an infection just above her knee. She has confirmed she will compete on the 28th but only on the bars.
McKenzie Slee is also carrying an injury. Ligament damage to foot sustained last month has failed to heel satisfactorily and has limited the range of disciplines she can compete it .
With Slee and Tempero competing in limited disciplines and McGregor out of the event, Ferencz says the team events result will be affected.
We wont be able to get full points in any of the team disciplines so well be ten or eleven points behind to start.
Its incredibly disappointing and the results at this competition will not reflect the high standards our gymnasts have achieved. We are still committed to doing our best, in spite of the circumstances.
The team will go on to compete at the World Championships in Nanjing, China in October and Ferencz hopes this next event will enable the team to demonstrate their capability.
