Sam Dick finished fifth in the final of the men’s vault.

Dick, 20, scored 13.900 and 13.666 for his two vaults, giving him a final score of 13.783. The winner of the gold medal was Englishman Jake Jarman, who scored 14.916.

Dick, who lives in Auckland, said he went in with the attitude that he had nothing to lose. While he was delighted to be in the final, one thing he didn’t enjoy was being the last competitor to vault.

“I hate that. It sucks. You have to sit there and watch vaulter after vaulter. I like to get in there and get it over with.”
