In
2012 Matthew finished 4th at the 11th FINA World Short
Course Championships, but was promoted to the bronze medal after the third
place finisher was disqualified following a positive drugs test.
He broke Danyon Loader’s long-standing NZ Record in the 400m freestyle at the
2014 New Zealand Open Championships to qualify for the 2012 London Olympic
games.
Matthew broke Loader’s 200m freestyle record in 2013 and lowered it again to
1:47:09 at the Pan Pacific Championships on the Gold Coast in 2014. He competed
in the 200m and 400m freestyle and the 4x200m freestyle and 4x100m medley
relays at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.
At the 16th FINA World Championships in Russia he finished 47th in the 400m
freestyle and 28th fastest in the 200m freestyle.
He contested the 200m freestyle finishing 20th in a time of 1:47.37 at the 2016
Rio Olympic Games despite being hampered with an ankle injury in preparation.
He won the 100m freestyle and was first equal with Matthew Hutchins in the 200m
freestyle at the 2017 New Zealand Open Championships, qualifying for the 17th
FINA World Championships in the heats of the 200m freestyle.
