Biography

Richie is the first weightlifter to represent New Zealand at four Commonwealth Games. Richie has been competing in weightlifting for 20 years and has picked up a gold medal at Glasgow 2014 and a silver at Delhi 2010. Richie has been a member of the NZOC Athletes' Commission since 2018 and in 2024 was elected chair of the commission. 

He also competed in the London 2012 Olympic Games placing 11th and the Rio 2016 Olympic Games placing 15th.

In 2017 Richie won the National Weightlifting Championships and placed second at the 2017 Oceania Weightlifting Championships. 

Richie Patterson and his wife Pip spend their time training, running a weightlifting/CrossFit facility in Auckland and raising their son Cooper. Richie is also the founder and lead of Manual Handling NZ which delivers modern and practical manual handling courses, reducing the risk of injuries in the workplace.
